Running Deer School is really pleased to an approved centre for both ASDAN and Gateway Qualifications. This is a really important step for us, as it increases the opportunities for our young people to leave us with a range of qualifications which match their interests and goals.

ASDAN is an internationally recognised awarding body who offer courses which can be tailored to individual needs and interests. Their programmes are challenge-based, meaning students can immerse themselves in longer projects, or choose a range of shorter ones, to suit them. ASDAN courses are also relevant to vocational interests and the development of life skills, as well as more traditional curriculum subjects.

Running Deer School is now an ASDAN registered centre, offering the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness to our students in Years 9-11, as well as some of ASDAN’s Short Course awards including Expressive Arts.

The Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) is a nationally recognised qualification available at Levels 1, 2 and 3. The qualification offers imaginative ways of accrediting young people’s activities. It promotes, and allows centres to record, a wide range of personal qualities, abilities and achievements of young people, as well as introducing them to new activities and challenges.

ASDAN CoPE, at Levels 1 and 2 is a qualification aimed at students in Years 10 and 11 and is equivalent in size to a GCSE. As well as helping students to develop a range of skills and personal qualities, CoPE has also been shown to have a positive impact on students’ achievements in Maths and English: https://www.asdan.org.uk/news/2014-04-report-shows-cope-boosts-pupils-gcse-success.

The CoPE curriculum comprises 13 modules. The modules are divided into three sections; section A, B and C. Each section should take at least 10 hours to complete – 10 hours is worth one credit. Students will need 12 credits to gain the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness. The module titles are:

  • Communication;
  • Citizenship and community;
  • Sport and leisure;
  • Independent living;
  • The environment;
  • Vocational preparation;
  • Health and fitness;
  • Work-related learning and enterprise;
  • Science and technology;
  • International links;
  • Expressive arts;
  • Beliefs and values;
  • Combined studies

Students produce a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your achievements. Students must also demonstrate competence at Level 1 or 2 in the six CoPE skills units:

  • Introduction to Working with Others
  • Introduction to Improving own Learning and Performance
  • Introduction to Problem Solving
  • Planning and Carrying out a Piece of Research
  • Communication through Discussion
  • Planning and Giving an Oral Presentation

Gateway Qualifications

Gateway Qualifications is a not-for-profit Awarding Organisation offering qualifications, Access to HE Diplomas, apprenticeships and more.

Running Deer School was drawn to the flexibility of Gateway’s qualifications and the fact that each qualification is not prescriptive in how students can meet the qualification outcomes, so we can tailor what we teach and what the students learn to suit them. Students can also use a range of presentation styles for their work. In addition, Gateway offer a large number of vocational courses which really suited our Running Deer students.

This year, we are offering the Level 1 Award in Land-based Studies, and have students choosing modules focussing on animal care and welfare. We are also offering the Level 2 Award in Applied Science and Technology to all of our Year 10 and 11 students.

Current Applied Science and Technology projects are focussing on how our genes dictate the function of our organs, with students researching genetic disorders which affect specific organs.
